Excitement and anticipation are a part of the wedding planning process. The big day will be here before you know it–it will also be over before you know it, too. Yes, you should soak up each moment of one of the biggest days of your life! One thing’s for certain, and two thing’s for sure–you want to relive the best day ever forever. The best value is to make sure that the moments of your wedding day are tangible. Here is some advice on choosing a wedding photographer to document your big day.
Budget
Consider things that are most important to you and come up with your number. Start researching a few wedding photographers in your area so you will have a general idea of wedding photography pricing. Another factor to consider is the timeline and shot list expectations– if you want to save money and getting ready photos are not a priority to you, maybe you will be willing to go with a different package. Second photographers and additional hours of coverage, so be sure to communicate with your partner what is most important to the both of you!
Style
There are so many photography trends – light and airy, bright and vivid, dramatic — find what will appeal to you now AND for many generations. Look beyond the current trends, and you will discover your exact taste. Make a collection of your favorite wedding photos that you’ve seen (hello, Pinterest!) and ask yourself why you like them –is it the editing, candid moments captured, composition? Find a photographer that aligns with your vision, and show them your collection and discuss this during your discovery/consultation call with them.
Full Wedding Gallery Viewing
It’s no secret that wedding photographers place their best work on their website. Ask the potential photographer to send you a full gallery of a real wedding that he or she has shot so you will have a more comprehensive range, from getting ready shots to the reception exit (if planned).
Lighting
Lighting is essential in photography. Consider the weather, the overall ambiance of your wedding day when choosing your wedding photographer. Light during a fall/winter wedding will look very different from a spring/summer wedding. A wedding at 1:00 pm will look different than a 6:00 pm wedding. Ask questions about lighting with discussing with a wedding photographer, he or she should be able to explain different lighting situations and outcomes easily, and assist the couple with a wedding day timeline that will give the best lighting possible during the wedding day.
Chemistry
Not only between you and your boo, but what about between you, the couple, and the wedding photographer? I cannot stress this enough–the wedding photographer will be spending more time with the couple than anyone else on your big day! Perhaps a Zoom meeting or video chat will help you know if the photographer is friendly and honest. Find someone that you feel comfortable with, you like, and trust because you are entrusting some of the most precious moments with him/her.
